POTTER: Thomas Wesley. With heavy hearts and deepest sadness our beloved husband and father, Thomas (Tom) Potter passed away suddenly on September 8, 2010 at his home in Elgin. Tom was born on Jan 21, 1965 in Arcola, Saskatchewan to Wes and Vera Potter (Thomas). Tom was one of seven children. His family moved to various towns in Manitoba before making their home in Brandon. Tom graduated high school from Crocus Plains High School. Tom held various jobs before beginning his 23 year career with Canadian Pacific Railway as a conductor/trainman. Tom worked until his passing with Canadian Pacific and was extremely proud that in 2007 he obtained his Locomotive Engineer Certification. He enjoyed the many friendships made with his fellow brothers of the railway. He was extremely proud of his work and took great pride in his workmanship. He always ensured that safety measures were followed. In 1998, Tom met Linda (Grieve) and together they spent 10 years in Brandon before moving to Elgin in August of 2008. Tom loved the move to the small community of Elgin and made many friends in the community. In January of 2005 they were blessed with son Liam and in 2007 with daughter, Kassandra. The birth of his children and the time spent with them was truly the most special and important moments of Tom’s life. His world revolved around his children. In May of 2008, Tom was diagnosed with a terminal lung illness and fought courageously with many alternative natural therapies to try and heal and control his illness. His gallant effort will be remembered by his loved ones. Tom was a very generous man who welcomed everyone into his home. Many nieces, nephews and friends have stayed extended periods in his home and all were welcomed with a warm heart, a good meal and laughter. Tom loved family gatherings. His motto always was – the more, the merrier. He often spoke of his childhood and the visits to his grandparent’s farm at Hartney where he and his many cousins enjoyed fun and mischief. Tom had many hobbies but he had extreme passion for hunting and enjoyed his time spent with friends during hunting season. He was looking forward to the day that he could take Liam out hunting. Tom also was extremely interested in tropical fish. He spent many hours raising/breeding fish. He was extremely proud of his discus fish. He also spent many hours woodworking by hand the fish stands for his fish. He also developed a keen interest in gardening when he moved to Elgin. Tom was a member of the Elgin & Area Lions Club, the Elgin Museum board, UCT of Brandon and the Manitoba Wildlife Association. Tom is survived by his wife, Linda and children Liam and Kassandra.
