SMITH: Alberta Gertrude, age 91, passed away November 1, 2010 at the Souris Personal Care Home. Alberta was born November 10, 1918 in Sherbrooke, Quebec to Vernon and Dorothy Mayhew. Alberta met and married Harold Smith in Timmons, Ontario in 1938. In 1942 Alberta, Harold and Dorothy moved to Souris, the hometown of Harold. Wayne was born in Souris. Alberta was a past matron of the Order of Eastern Star, she was delighted to be honored at the Legion Auxiliary 50th anniversary and was a member of Rebecca’s, holding offices in these groups, giving freely of her time when she was able. Mom was very talented in many crafts. She taught 4-H sewing, did ceramics, quilted, did many beautiful needlework pictures and knit many articles. She knit scarves for the Christmas hampers in December of 2009. Shortly after Harold’s death Alberta moved into Victoria Park Lodge. She was very proud of her suite at the lodge. She enjoyed her time there, the people and the evening card games. Alberta was predeceased by her husband Harold, her grandson Gary and her brother Donald Mayhew. She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Wallace of Brandon, son Wayne (Ruth) Smith of Souris, four grandchildren, one great granddaughter and her sister Ethel Howard of Sudbury, Ontario. Alberta was admitted to the hospital in early January, then moving into the Personal Care Home in May. Donations may be made to the Souris Hospital Palliative Care Fund c/o ARHA Box 10, Souris, Manitoba, R0K 2C0. A graveside service was held at the Souris and Glenwood Cemetery on Thursday November 4, 2010 with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. Funeral arrangements are with Kowalchuk’s Funeral Home in Souris.
