McMILLAN: It is with great sadness we announce the tragic passing of our Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma Dorothy Yvonne McMillan on October 27, 2010. Dorothy was born October 1, 1928 in Carberry, Manitoba where she took her schooling. While working at the Rex Café she met her future husband Bruce. They were married December 18, 1946 and their son Bill was born in 1947. They moved to Surrey, B.C. returning two years later to work with W. D. McMillan in the butcher shop. Mom worked at a care home and belonged to the Orange Lodge. Daughter Valerie was born in 1955 and then their family was complete. When the business was sold in Carberry they purchased McMillan Meats in Brandon and moved to Second St. and later to 354 Dennis Street. Momworked at the butcher shop besides doing the books for the business. After fire destroyed the business, Mom semi-retired and babysat for the Dowsett family. She spent many hours going with Valerie to numerous horse shows. Mom enjoyed a few holidays to B.C. to visit her mom and family and to the USA. Mom moved to an apartment on 19th Street and due to poor health she moved to Valleyview Care Centre two years ago. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Bruce, sister Ellen, brother Ewan, mother Mary Wallace at the age of 100 and brother-in-law John Hayball. Mom leaves behind to cherish her memory her son Bill (Sharon) of Kenton; daughter Valerie of Brandon; granddaughter Lisa (Dennis) Hemrica of Kenton; grandson Charlie McMillan of Burnaby, B.C.; great grandchildren Jaden and Brett Hemrica of Kenton; sister Mima (Sam) Quigley; brother Don (Marlene) Wallace of Castlegar, B.C.; sisters-in-law Rowena Hayball of Carberry and Joy Wallace of Princeton, B.C., many nieces, nephews, cousins and grand doggy Maggy. The celebration of Dorothys life was held November 9th at Memories Chapel with Rev. Shannon McCarthy officiating. The Urnbearer was her great granddaughter Jaden Hemrica. Interment followed at the Carberry Cemetery. The family would like to thank Valleyview Care Centre for their care over the last two years and Memories Chapel Staff for their services. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th St. East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 7M6.
