BETKER: Joyce Isabel Betker(nee Cole). We are extremely sad to announce the passing of Joyce Betker on November 12, 2010 at the Souris District Hospital in Souris, Manitoba. Born in 1925 at Wolseley, Saskatchewan, she was predeceased by her parents, Stan and Girlie Cole, her sister Donna and her beloved husband Otto. She is survived by her sister Marnie (Don), her sister Maxine, her second love Norval More, her son Terry (Claire), son Sheldon (Carla) and daughter Sandra; by her grandchildren Kate (Craig), Gavin, Kyla, Stephanie, Jay, Amy, Lena, Emily and Zoe; by her great-grandchildren Cole and Connor; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joyce took her Registered Nurses training in Winnipeg, returning home to nurse in Wolseley. She met Otto Betker and they were married on April 19, 1949. They farmed on the Betker farm at Lemberg, Saskatchewan for a year and then moved to the Hill homestead farm at Hilton, Manitoba for three years. They moved to the current family farm at Souris in 1952 where they lived until they retired to Souris in 1986. Joyce loved her family and was especially proud of her grandchildren, spending countless hours with them in all kinds of activities and interests, resulting in many cherished memories. Her great grandchildren were an added treasure. Joyce loved the farm and everything about it. She enjoyed the outdoors, sports, reading, playing cards (especially bridge), dances and socializing and good times in general. She could bake the best pie ever! She volunteered in various community organizations, most significantly later in the life at the Souris Drop-In Center where she met Norval, finding happiness that she believed would never be hers again. The family would like to thank the Doctors, nurses and hospital workers for their kindness and for their loving and extremely capable care. The family would also like to thank all the friends and family who visited with her during her relatively short stay in the hospital.
