MATHISON: John Mathison, July 16, 1918 - Nov. 15, 2010. Husband of Ruby and father of Fran (Frankie) Dyck and Murray Mathison, passed away quickly and peacefully Monday, November 15, 2010. John was born in the Hamiota district and except for a few trips to B.C. and Toronto, he lived his whole life at Hamiota. John lived and loved to farm. First with his brothers and later with his son Murray. Even at 92 years of age he still paid attention to grain prices, yields and grades. He was part of a generation that graduated from horses to four wheel drive tractors and binders and threshing machines to straight cut combines. John also lived for his family. His brothers and sisters and their families were very special to him and his real joy in life was his wife Ruby, daughter Frankie and son Murray. He was a real part of his of his childrens lives and continued to follow his six grandchildren and then his ten great-grandchildren. His face lit up and his eyes shone when the grandchildren came with their families to visit. John was born July 16, 1918 to James and Margaret Mathison and lived within a few miles of his birth place all of his life. On April 2, 1943, he married Ruby Colbeck of the Scotia District. John and Ruby had 67 years of happy marriage. John was quite active in the Hamiota community for many years. He was on the Hamiota United Church building committee for many years. He was an avid follower of minor baseball and hockey, the Red Sox and Huskies and curling. He curled for many years and had some interesting stories about some of the bonspiels he attended. He really enjoyed watching his grandchildren play ringette, hockey, basketball and baseball. John was predeceased by his parents, brothers Covert, Clark, Bruce, and Frank, as well as his sisters Martha and Maud. He was also predeceased by nephews Jim, Ken, Lawrence (Buck), and Gerald as well as niece Gladys and son-in-law Bill Dyck. Those left to mourn his passing and treasure the memories are his wife Ruby. Daughter Frankie, son Murray (Lynda) along with grandchildren Jodi Dyck (Keith Moen), Chris Dyck, Shawn Dyck, Trina Mathison (Darren Eddie), Charlene Mathison (Chris Routledge), Leanne Lelond (Tom) and great-grandchildren Leif and Ruby Moen, Allaura, Mallory and Malcolm Eddie, Owen and Avery Routledge and Shanna, John and Joe Lelond. Also his sister Mary Murray and sister-in-law Eunice Brooks (Bill) and brother- in-law Les Colbeck, as well as many nephews and nieces.
