McBURNEY: With great sadness, we announce the passing of Shirley Annabelle McBurney, in the early morning hours of December 25, 2010. She will be greatly missed by her children, Sharon (Paul) Wedderburn, Doug (Russella) McBurney, and Carla (Ed) Rempel; by her grandchildren Donald (Shelley) Wedderburn, Shawn Wedderburn, Amber (Jamie) McBurney-Vann, Katelyn Rempel (Michael Howe), and Mitchell Rempel (Chelsea Wellborn); and her great grandchildren, Katie and Travis Wedderburn. Mom also leaves behind her sisters, Jean (Cliff) Dwinnell and Myra (Bud) Briggs; her sisters-in-law, Betty Saunderson, Jean McBurney and Bev Mitchell and brother-in-law Terry McBurney; and numerous relatives and friends. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Donald (1971); her brothers Wesley (1944) and Murray (1992); her grandson, Matthew (1993); and her husband, Jim (2004). Mom was born March 11, 1925 to Frances and Redge Mitchell at her Uncle Johnny and Aunt Bessie’s home in the District of Melgund, Manitoba. Mom grew up on the family farm in the same District, acquiring her elementary education at the country schoolhouse across the road. Mom then moved to Hartney to attend high school. After leaving high school, Mom worked as the bookkeeper for the Hartney Co-Op for a while before marrying our father in 1946. Mom and Dad enjoyed life in Sanford, Osborne and Gordon Siding as Dad was transferred about with Manitoba Pool Elevators. It was during this time that Mom and Dad started their family and by 1952, Mom, Dad, Sharon and Doug moved back to Hartney as Dad had purchased the McBurney family farm. Mom and Dad farmed the family homestead until 1966 when they sold and moved the family, which now included Carla, to Minnedosa where Dad managed the U.G.G. Elevator. After Dad’s sudden passing in 1971, Mom moved to Brandon. In 1987, Mom married ‘Jimmy’ Morden and they enjoyed their retirement years spending time with family and friends, traveling around Manitoba and to other points within Canada and the States. We will remember our Mom as a gentle and generous lady, who had a quick and warm smile. Mom loved and loved being with her family. She was immensely proud of her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. Her favorite times were when she was surrounded by family and friends, and could often be found in the midst of some good-natured teasing. We want to thank the staff at Hillcrest in Brandon for the years of care and attention they provided to our Mother. A service will be held at the Kowalchuk Funeral Chapel in Souris on Wednesday, December 29 at 1:00 pm with internment in the Hartney Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St. Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 2B7.
