SOLON: Paul Victor Solon Sr. It is with much sadness the family announces the passing of Paul (Pops) Solon Sr. after a brief illness on January 4, 2011 at the Palliative ward at the Brandon Assiniboine Centre. Pops will be greatly missed by sons Dwight (Gisele), Paul Jr. (Cyndi) and only grandchild Samantha, nieces and nephews, cousins and countless friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Gladys, his parents, Samuel and Nettie Solon, brothers Rick (Connie) and Wally. Paul was a proud lifelong resident of Brandon. He served in the military and then worked at Coke, CP Railway, and retired as a letter carrier from Canada Post after 28 years. He was actively involved in the community throughout his life. He was a long time member of St. Augustine's Church, Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 3, Sokol Hall and Ukrainian National Home. When the boys were younger, he was always supporting them in their sporting events, coaching, refereeing, umpiring and shuttling the boys and team mates throughout the province. Up to his passing, Paul was an avid golfer, bowler and was proud to be one of the longest and oldest living Wheat King Season ticket holders. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks for the outstanding care and compassion to Pops and his family by the Emergency ward, ICU and Palliative ward at the Brandon Regional Health Authority. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine's Catholic Church 327-4th Street on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 10:30 am. Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Dominic Yuen. A private family interment service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for Palliative Care, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.
