CHARNEY: It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Uncle Michael (Mike) Charney on January 13th, 2011 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Uncle Mike was born September 30th, 1924 in Marco, Manitoba. He attended Ruska Rawa School and his high school in Rossburn, Manitoba. In 1944 he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He served with the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment in Britain, Holland and Germany and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp, the France and German Star and the war Medal in 1939. Michael remained after the war in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Michael returned to Rossburn and lived with his parents. He taught school for a short while at Ruska Rawa and Zaporza Schools. He was later employed at Nick's Grocery Store, operated by his sister and brother-in-law Ann and Nick Stupnisky. Michael moved to Thunder Bay, ON in 1951. He worked for Western Grocier and at Confederation College, he retired in 1983 due to ill health. Uncle Mike spent leisure time golfing, playing cards and working in his yard and garden. He was a member of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church as well as a life long member of the Westfort Prosvita Society. Uncle Mike is survived by his son Gary Charney of Thunder Bay, Ontario and one sister-in-law Susan Charney of Rossburn, Manitoba He was predeceased by his parents Dmytro and Julia Charney (nee Ewanyshyn). Sisters Mary (John) Groshak, Mabel (Matt) Procyk, Ann (Nick) Stupnisky, brothers Stanley in infancy, Thomas Charney, Russel and Martha Charney and his wife and best friend Millie.
