McLEOD: Bruce F. McLeod, May 10, 1913-January 25, 2011 With sadness in our hearts and joy at having had him in our lives for so long, we announce the death in Vancouver of Bruce McLeod, devoted brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and wonderful friend. Bruce leaves a legacy of love, gentle compassion and Christian caring. Born in Manitoba in 1913, he grew up on a farm, learning early the necessity and rewards of hard work. He was educated as a flight instrument mechanic and served in the RCAF during the war. With his wife Evelyn, nee Harland, the love of his life for 68 years until her death in 2009, he raised three children in Winnipeg. His skill with all things mechanical was a constant thread in his working career, leading to a position as supervisor for automotive mechanics in Manitoba. Always curious, resourceful and open to new adventures, he and Evelyn moved to Bowen Island after his retirement, where he acquired new skills and quite literally built a beautiful new home. They lived there until 2006 when they moved to Clarendon Court in Vancouver where staff and residents welcomed them into a new community. Bruce was a lifelong active member of the United Church and a progressive community leader, honoured and respected by all those who knew him, but the centre of his life was his family. Bruce was the beloved father of Reta (Ian McKay), John (Sharon) and Deborah (John Miller) and cherished grandfather of Layla, Emma, Monique, John, Rachel, Meredith (Malcolm), David and Amy, as well as great-grandfather of Manny. He will also be deeply missed by his brothers Angus (Dorothy), Jack (Dona), sister-in-law Joan, Evelyn's brother Earle Harland (Florence) and his nephews and nieces who loved him. Burial was held on Saturday, January 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Capilano View Cemetery, followed by a celebration of Bruce's life at Deer Lake United Church in Burnaby at 2:30 p.m.
