STAWYCHNY: Anna “Baba” Stawychny passed away on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 87 years. Preceded by her husband Bohdan “Big Jim” Stawychny. Surviving are several brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces from the Ukraine. Left to cherish her memories are Sam (Dianne) Stawychny of Brantford, Ontario, grandsons, Kevin of Brantford, Ontario and Darryl of Vancouver, B.C. Verna Stawychny of Brandon, Manitoba, Nick Stawychny of Brandon, Manitoba, and John Stawychny of Brandon, Manitoba. Born on August 6, 1923 in Heisming, Ukraine. She came to Canada with her family on December 4, 1949 settling in Decker, Manitoba for about a year, then moving to Brandon. Working at several jobs till her last one at Metev Woollen Mills where she finally retired. Anna made a few trips back to “the old country” as they liked to call it where she met with many of the relatives that she left behind. In 1984 Anna’s youngest sister, Pasha came to Canada for a visit. Anna always maintained a large garden, which was a good source for the ingredients for the many perogies and cabbage rolls that she made over the years. There was always a back up garden at the 16th Street homestead as well. She was always there weeding and pruning the various vegetables to ensure the best quality for as long as her body was willing. In recent years health issues caused her to cut back on the size that was maintained, just enough to feed herself and still make the odd batch of perogies and cabbage rolls. Three years ago Anna found herself first in Fairview Retirement Home and then the Dinsdale Home. She was able to return back to her house where she lived for a year and a half without any incidents till her stroke on Tuesday, February 10, 2011. We would like to thank the nurses that came every day to give her insulin shots 2 times a day and also the staff at both care homes. Thanks also to Memories Chapel for their kind help. Donations can be made on behalf of Anna to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
