SHEARDOWN: Melvin Douglas of Brandon, Manitoba, entered into rest on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 76 years of age at the Brandon Regional Health Centre with family by his side. Melvin was born February 15, 1934 at Hamiota, Manitoba, beloved son of the late Thomas and Jennie Sheardown and brother of Gordon (Marion), Beth (Jamie) Jamieson, Lorne, Ross (Norma), Doreen (Jim) Alexander and Glen (Helen) and uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was the second youngest in his family. Melvin attended school in Hamiota and then worked as a farm laborer for six years for both Gordon and Jim Killoh. He became employed with the Manitoba Department of Highways in 1958 and helped build many roads throughout the province. In 1977 he began work at the Head Office in Brandon. At that time he purchased a mobile home in Whiteswan Trailer Park. Melvin enjoyed 33 years there sharing his life with many friends and neighbors! He retired in 1993. Melvin loved to fish, hunt and golf which he did until illness prevented him to do so. At home, he always had a crossword puzzle book close by. He also loved to “take a drive” to see what was happening around Brandon and the countryside. Melvin enjoyed travelling and made several trips to the west coast and the United States. Helping with harvest at Doreen and Jim’s, Connie and Harry’s and Greg and Lynne’s at Lenore was always a highlight. April 14, 1999 was a proud day for Melvin as he aced the 160 yard third hole at Northern Pines Golf Course. This was witnessed by his good friend, Harry Crowston. Melvin never missed a Sheardown Family Reunion or a family meal celebrating a special event. He loved to tease and laugh and had a twinkle in his blue eyes! While Melvin did enjoy visiting he was also a private and quiet man so was usually the first to arrive and the first to leave. At most of our tables, he had a certain place where he always sat! We will miss you, Melvin! Heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at the Brandon Regional Health Centre (Assiniboine Centre 2nd and 3rd Floors) for the kindness and caring you gave to our loved one! Everyone is welcome to attend a graveside service at the Hamiota Cemetery, Hamiota, Manitoba, on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, please join with Melvin’s family for a luncheon at the Hamiota Community Centre and for a time of fellowship and sharing of memories.
