OTTEN: The death of Matthias “Matt” Otten, beloved partner of Joanne Canada- Somers occurred suddenly on Sunday, May 22, 2011. Matt was born June 30, 1960 in Lübeck, Germany. Matt received his education in Germany, graduating in 1975. He began his career as a chef in Germany, receiving his Red Seal in 1979, his journeyman Silver Seal in 1980 and Executive Chef Training and Gold Seal in 1984. After moving to Canada, he received his Canadian Red Seal in 2003 and Certificate with Honours in Adult Education in 2010. Matt worked in many small restaurants and various hotels and large convention centers in the role of Chef and Executive Chef. Matt’s greatest love was teaching at Assiniboine Community College as a Chef Instructor and Executive Chef since 2002. While in Brandon, Matt volunteered at various organizations (non profit) and many community events. He was a member of the German Society of Westman. Matt enjoyed horses, archery and photography and was very proud to share his passion for food with his many students that he taught. Matt leaves his life partner, Joanne, and a daughter Lisa in Germany, a son Timothy and daughter Meagan, both of Winnipeg. He also leaves his step-daughters; Jen (Chris) and Tiani and a granddaughter, Addison. Matt was predeceased by his mother, Inge Christa Luise Otten. The Ceremony to Celebrate Matt’s Life was held at Central United Church on Monday, May 30, 2011. Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood officiated. Pallbearers were Manfred Wicht, Wolfgang Monin, Chris Desjardins, Kevin Hefferan, Riley Vandermeulen and Thorsten Schmidt. Expressions of sympathy may be made atwww.memorieschapel.com.
