RANNIE: Suddenly, on Tuesday, June 14th, Jim Rannie of Binscarth, Manitoba passed away at the Birtle Health Center at the age of 92 years. James (Jim) Scarth Rannie was born in the Lidcliff District, Manitoba on December 2, 1918. James was the son of Robert Scarth Rannie and Eliza (Daisie) Harriet Rannie (nee Flett), and had 3 brothers, Robert, Douglas and Richard, and one sister, Sheila. At the outset of World War II, Jim enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifle ("Little Black Devils") at the age of 21 and served overseas, where he was wounded in action. While overseas, Jim met Mary (Maisie) Elizabeth Rutherford Leask, and they were married on March 20th, 1951. Jim and Maisie have two children, Elizabeth and Graham. Jim and Maisie operated the family farm in Binscarth until the mid-1980's, when Jim retired and turned the farm over to Graham. Jim was also active in crop insurance for several years prior to retiring. Jim had a very active retirement, an avid golfer, their retirement home backed on the Binscarth Golf Course, which Jim regularly used. Jim also enjoyed fishing, and looked forward to his annual fishing trips with friends. He attended every Royal Winnipeg Rifles reunion until in later years health issues prevented him from attending. Jim was an active member of the Legion for 65 years. As well, he enjoyed meeting friends at Choy's restaurant for coffee, and looked forward to many family get togethers. Jim was predeceased by brothers Bob and his wife Dorothy, Doug, and Dick and his wife Noreen, sister Sheila and her husband Andrew. Jim will be missed by Maisie, son Graham and his wife, Janice, daughter Elizabeth and her husband Colin, 4 grandchildren Crystal and her partner Eric, Scott and his wife Hanna, Kristie and Sean, 6 great-grandchildren Hailey, Ben, Chayanne, Amaya, Ethan, and Sierra, and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held Monday, June 20, 2011 from the Binscarth Community Hall with Pastor George Fry officiating. Interment followed in the Binscarth Cemetery. The members of the Legion stood as an honor guard. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Russell Personal Care Home or Sunnyside Manor Personal Care Home. Braendle-Bruce Funeral Service was in care of the arrangements. (204) 773-2747).
