EDE: Robina Gertrude was born August 22, 1923 to William Levi Ede and Margaret(Sutherland) Ede at Levine (CN railway) Station, Manitoba. She passed away June 26, 2011. Gert recalled some of her fondest memories growing up in Levine along with sisters Margaret "Daisy" (Brown), Elizabeth "Bess" (Serwonka), Jessie (Bradley), Mary (Allen) and brother Bill, where they enjoyed lots of fresh air and play and a good 2-mile walk to school. Gert started her paid employment as a waitress in Rivers and later moved to Brandon where she worked primarily at Eaton's Dept. Store. In Brandon she lived with sister Bess's family and had many joyful times with nieces and nephew, returning in the 1970s to care for her mother in Rivers. While the Rivers family home and stove were relatively small in size, that was no deterrent to welcoming big family gatherings to celebrate the holidays, where she was the unofficial photographer. A sweet taste was always left in the mouth by Gertie's delicious butter tarts. Gert enjoyed highland dancing and country music. She was a talented gardener indoors and out, where her plants thrived beautifully. She also had a special touch with crocheting and knitting ~ especially memorable was her talent for knitting afghan blankets with broomsticks. Gert enjoyed talking about current events and politics, loved to share a laugh and a game or two of rummy. Upon discovering their beloved dog, Lucky, was allergic to smoke, Gert and her brother Bill gave up smoking 'cold turkey'. Gert was able to fulfill her wish of remaining in her Rivers home, until just a few days before her passing on June 26th with family by her side at the Brandon General Hospital following surgery. A graveside funeral was held on July 6th at Rivers Cemetary with a heartfelt service by Reverend Paul Curtis (retired) of the Anglican Church and Amazing Grace sung by great nieces Erin Brown and Amanda Kloos. Left to mourn and fondly remember Gert are sisters Margaret "Daisy" Brown of Oak River and Jessie Bradley (& husband Charlie) of Virden; along with nieces and nephews from the Allen family (Bill, Shirley, Linda, Ken, Gary, Jim, Tom), the Bradley family (Donald, Albert), Brown Family (Sandra, Dale), and the Serwonka family (John, Deb, Pat, Dianne, Karen), as well as many great nieces and nephews. Anyone wishing to make a donation in honour of Gert, may do so to an organization/charity of your choice.Rest in peace, dear Gertie.
