ROBERTSON: Harold Mervin passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Harold was born in Wawanesa on October 28, 1924. He grew up in Margaret and went to school in Pinkham. Harold married Muriel on October 20, 1945. They moved to Minto where Harold worked at Johnston's Hardware Store. Mervyn was born in 1948; Lawrence in 1951; and Dennis in 1956. Shortly after Dennis was born Mom and Dad and the boys moved to Brandon. They had a new house moved in from Morden and settled on 22nd Street where they lived up until a year ago when they moved to Riverheights Terrace. Dad worked at McLeods when they came to Brandon. In 1960- their only daughter Mavis was born. After McLeods, Dad went to Co-op where he managed the Hardware department and then to Beaver Lumber which is where he retired from. Mom and Dad loved to dance - they did square and round dancing with the Circle 8's Dance Club for many years. Dad also called round dancing. They loved to travel to jamborees all across the country side. For many family vacations we went to Penticton, B.C. where they participated in the Peach Festival Jamboree. Mom and Dad loved to travel south during the winter to Desert Hot Springs. Over the years they developed many friendships and enjoyed socializing with everyone. Their annual summer project was making strawberry jam - they would go out the first day of picking (no matter how hot it was) and pick at least 10 pails of berries. Then they would go home and make the jam. They liked to have a stock of about 75 to 100 pint sealers to last till the next strawberry season. They supplied their children and grandchildren with this great jam. They loved their gardens, both vegetable and flowers. They would plant approximately 48 plus tomato plants as well as all the other veggies. They were pretty generous with the produce that they grew. Dad was "Mr. Fix It" - he would try to (and usually succeeded) in fixing anything. He loved to tinker, one of the things he did was set up a watering system for all the gardens. Their yard was always very attractive and colorful. Dad loved his grandchildren and was always interested in their accomplishments, whether it was school-related, sports or dance and as they grew into adults, he was very interested in their plans. Dad also loved his grand "dogs" At family dinners he would always sneak food from the table to give to them, thinking that we didn't see what he was doing. The dogs sure loved him for that. He always had treats for the dogs when they came to visit, they knew who the softy was. Dad loved to celebrate milestones their 40th, 50th, 60th and most recently their 65th wedding anniversary last October. As well as both Mom and Dad's 80th birthdays. Mom and Dad enjoyed their move to Riverheights Terrance in the spring of 2010. Dad had more than his share of health issues but that didn't stop him from enjoying his life with great joy and happiness. He got a new lease on life with his triple bypass surgery in Palm Springs (during one of their trips down south) and this gave him many extra years for his family and friends to enjoy with him. Dad, you will be sadly missed by your loving wife, your family and your many friends. We all love you! Harold is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Muriel. His loving family: Mervyn (Terri) their children Jason (Breanna) great grandchild Keira: Lawrence (Theresa) their children Chanse and Cyndall: Dennis (Tunde) their children Carrie (Adam) and Daniel: Mavis (Russell) Van Buskirk their children Andy and Amy. We would like to thank all those who attended the funeral and who sent cards and food, we appreciated it greatly. Also a special thanks goes out to Dr. Butler, the home care girls and the staff at the Assiniboine Centre - for their care and support provided to dad and us, the family, many thanks.
