DUTCHYSHEN: Nikola (Nick). With sorrow in our hearts we sadly announce the passing of Nick Dutchyshen of Lions Manor in Brandon at the Assiniboine Centre, Monday, August 29, 2011 at the age of 86 years with family by his side. Nick is survived by his wife Helen, Daughter Pat (Eugene) Kachkowski, sons: Ron (Kate) and Randy (Lori); grandchildren: Jeanette, Angela,Michelle, Terry, Matthew and Sara; great grandchildren Tripp and Erica and extended family. Nick was predeceased by his parents Michael and Christina, brother Peter and sisters: Jean, Anne, Vicky and Mary. Nick was born on April 28, 1925 in Ashville, Manitoba and lived on a small farm until the age of thirteen when the family moved to Dauphin, Manitoba. This is where Nick met Helen Yablonski and on September 25, 1949 they were married in Renwer, Manitoba. In 1952, with a new one year old daughter Pat, Nick and Helen moved to Brandon, where their family grew with the birth of Ron and Randy. While in Brandon, Nick worked at a few jobs before finding steady employment as a butcher at Brandon Packers. After a fire destroyed the packing plant he helped build the new Burns Meat Plant and when the plant opened Nick continued to work for Burns until he retired in 1984. Nick enjoyed several activities over the years. He 10 pin bowled for many years with family and friends and enjoyed fishing. His favorite pastime however was golfing with his sons or his closest longtime golf partners. His golf highlights included two hole in one's with the second one happening when he was 81 years old! Nick was very involved in his church life at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, where he served on the Men's Club and worked bingos in the Hall for many years. A very special thank-you to the staff on the second floor of the Assiniboine Centre for the comforting care they provided for Nick and family during his final few days. Prayers will be said Friday, September 2, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at Memories Chapel. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Michael Tkachuk and Cantor will be Stella Fedeniuk. Pallbearers will be Nick's six grandchildren. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery.
