GATES: James Secord Gates passed away on August 20, 2011 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 70 years. James was born in Carberry, Manitoba and his early life was spent in Gregg, Manitoba and Fairlight, Saskatchewan. He received his education at Gregg School. James left home at the age of 15 years and worked on farms on the Prairies and worked in the fruit orchards in BC. Eventually he moved to Toronto where he started his driving career with North American Van Lines and drove for them through Canada and the USA for many years. After the death of his in-laws and his wife, James returned to Brandon and at the time of his death was living in Lions Manor. James is survived by his brothers: Bill and family from Oshawa, Ontario, Don (Joan) of Brandon; sisters: Lorna Lang and Carol (Hugh) King of Brandon; sister-in-law Colleen Gates of Brandon. James is also survived by nephews: Brian, Paul, Mike Aaron, Scott, David, Ian; nieces: Brenda, Sandy, Allison, Melissa, Sarah; niece-in-law Brenda; great nephews: Russell and Eric and the families of the above mentioned. James was predeceased by his parents Doris and Alex Gates, parents-in-law May and Frank Carter, wife Peg, brother Rich Gates and nephew Daniel Lang. There will be a private graveside service held at the Carberry Plains Cemetery, Carberry, Manitoba. Friends who desire may make a donation in memory of James to the ALS Society of Canada, 493 Madison St. Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3J 1J2. Expressions of sympathy may be made atwww.memorieschapel.com.
