DICK: Norman Cowan - Norm passed away peacefully at the Moira Place Long Term Care Facility in Tweed, Ontario, on Dec. 26, 2011, at the age of 95. The beloved husband of the late Florence Muriel (Brem) Dick (nee Bremner), Norman will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by daughters Barbara Dick, Belleville, and Brenda (Rick) Courneya, Tweed, grandsons Burton Courneya and Taolana Dick Chakela, many nieces, nephews and friends. Norm was predeceased by his sisters Beth Sinclair and Norah Beattie and his brother David. Norm was born in Teeswater, Ontario on March 23, 1916. The family moved to Brandon, Manitoba, where he spent his youth and completed an apprenticeship as a linotype operator at the Brandon Sun newspaper. In 1942 Norm joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on convoy duty in the North Atlantic until the war ended in 1945. He married Brem in Vancouver on January 10, 1946. The following years were spent on a newspaper career that took them from the Vancouver News-Herald, to the Estevan Mercury and the Alameda Dispatch in Saskatchewan, to the Brandon Sun and finally in 1952 to the Atikokan Progress. There, Norm published the weekly paper with his partner Bob Clarke for 35 years. In Atikokan, Norm belonged to the Lions Club (charter member) and the Legion. He was an avid curler and golfer, and was instrumental in developing a golf course for the community. In 1987, Norm and Brem moved to Thunder Bay and subsequently to Napanee and Belleville to be closer to family. At Normans request there will be no service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Wartman Funeral Home, "Napanee Chapel" (613-354-3722). The family extends grateful thanks to Dr. Mustard and the wonderful staff at Moira Place.
