McTAVISH: Samuel Clare Woodrow McTavish February 13, 1915 January 13, 2012. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sam McTavish on January 13, 2012 at Hamiota Hospital. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Olga and son Greg. He is survived by his sister Lillian, brother Bob, nieces Dianne (Art), Deb (Jack) and Sandi as well as nephews Garth (Hope), Ian (Arla), Gary, Paul and Orville. He was predeceased by his brothers Gordon, Howard and Bill as well as sisters: Mary, Jean and Joyce. Sam was born in San Diego, California but moved as a baby back to Canada and was raised in Strathclair. Sam went on to be a farmer in the Cardale area for many years. While farming at Cardale, Sam met and married Olga (nee Moon) in 1952 and later welcomed his only child Greg in 1962. In 1974, he moved with his family from the farm to nearby Strathclair and later retired there. Throughout his years he was a hard worker, good provider and loving husband and father. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed playing baseball in his youth and golf in retirement. Sam also had a lifetime love of curling, both as a participant and spectator. For the nearly 97 years Sam blessed this planet, he thoroughly enjoyed his independence and a love of the land, whether as a farmer or a retiree who was so proud of his yard and garden. In retirement he cherished his annual winter trips to Victoria. A man who enjoyed simple pleasures and a sweet tooth, Sam greatly enjoyed his relaxation time playing cribbage and billiards or watching TV and having a chocolate. The family would like to express their appreciation and thanks to all the staff at Hamiota Hospital for the kindness and compassion shown to Sam during his final days. A private funeral service will take place. Sam will be laid to rest at Marney Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to join the family for a time of fellowship and sharing of memories on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 3:30 p.m. at Strathclair Municipal Hall, Strathclair. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Lung Association or to a charity of your choice. Raes Funeral Service of Shoal Lake is in care of arrangements.
