METCALFE: Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, Dorothy (Dodie) Ina Metcalfe (née Seafoot) passed away on February 15, 2012. Dodie was born in Bunclody, Manitoba on June 24, 1928 to Gertie and Fred Seafoot. She grew up on the family farm south of Brandon with her four brothers and older sister. She attended Normal School in Winnipeg, where she received her teaching certification. In 1949, she married the love of her life, David Richard (Dick) Metcalfe, and they remained married for 54 years. While living in Brandon, Dodie and Dick made many dear friends who remain in contact to this day. In 1966, they and their daughter, Jeanne, and son, Chris, moved from Brandon to Winnipeg, where they settled in Fort Richmond. Dodie was a kindergarten teacher for many years at St. Avila and Dalhousie Elementary Schools. Following their retirement, Dodie and Dick kept active by travelling the world, working on their splendid lawn and gardens and participating in the life of the Fort Garry United Church. Following her beloved Dick’s death in 2005, Dodie remained active with the church, was a regular attendee at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, the Winnipeg Symphony and the Canadian Club, volunteered at Dalnavert Museum and was a gracious host for her many friends. Last summer she continued to work on her garden; a source of great pride and solace. This fall as her health failed, she watched from the sunroom as the birds and “li’l red” the squirrel feasted from the bird feeder. Dodie is survived by her son and daughter, her daughter-in-law Tracy, her grandchildren, Kirsten, Quang and Quyen and her three grandchildren, Emily, Kate and Ryan, as well as her younger brother, Garth Seafoot. The family sincerely appreciates the respectful and professional care that she received from the staff at the Riverview palliative care unit. Following Dodie’s wishes, cremation has already taken place and interment will take place at a later date in a private family ceremony. The funeral service will be held at Fort Garry United Church (800 Point Road, Winnipeg) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 18. Together, we will celebrate Dodie’s life as a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher, mentor and friend. There will be a reception at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Fort Garry Building Fund. www.fortgarryunitedchurch.ca
