BROOKS: Florence Catherine (Kay) passed away March 3, 2012 at the Hamiota District Health Centre. Kay was a role model to all who knew her. She led by example in the way she cared, loved and showed respect to everyone. She was the solid root from which her family grew and were nurtured. She will be deeply missed by her children Earl (Lorraine), Sheila Harper (Mel), Audrey, Dale (Jackie), grandchildren Herb, Kim, Tanis (Toland), Melanie (Riley), Travis (Marisa) and Ryan; great grandchildren Dawson, Colt, Trinity, Connor, Austin, Brandon, Sawyer, Ethan and Avery, her sister Jean Doern and brother Bill Collie (Joan) and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Franklin, parents Robert and Florence Collie, sisters Ann (Jim Liddle), Grace (Ralph Henderson), and brother-in-law Doug Doern. Kay was born May 19, 1916, the second of five children. After finishing school she worked in Brandon for five years before coming to Hamiota in 1942 to cook at the hospital for $35.00 a month. On March 4, 1944 Kay married Franklin and they farmed until 1979 when they retired to Hamiota. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Kay served her community in many ways. She belonged to Grace Rebekah Lodge #35 for over 60 years and in 1981 she was chosen Rebekah of the Year for Manitoba. The United Church was an important part of Moms life, she was Sunday School Superintendent for 23 years and belonged to the U.C.W. She was a 4-H leader and a member of the Hamiota Agricultural Society for many years. After her family left home she took up curling and golfing. Kay was Honorary Life Member of the Hamiota Ladies Curling Club and curled actively until the age of 92. She was instrumental in the formation of the Golden Gals Playdowns. The celebration of Kays life was held at Hamiota United Church on March 7, 2012 conducted by Rev. Rachel Robinson. The interment took place at Hamiota Cemetery prior to the service. Donations in Kays memory can be made to: Hamiota United Church Memorial Fund; Hamiota District Sports Complex, Box 100; or Hamiota Golf Course, Hamiota, Mb. R0M 0T0. Funeral arrangements were with Campbell Funeral Home in Hamiota.
