McMORRIS: After a brief hospital stay, John Carson McMorris passed away peacefully on March 6, 2012 in the Souris Hospital, 4 days short of his 94th birthday. John was born on a farm north of Deloraine near Dand, MB on March 10, 1918. He attended Dand School. He left home for a few years and worked for farmers in the Dunrea-Margaret area before going back to farm with his parents east of Deloraine. In 1942 he took Royal Canadian Forces Basic Training in Brandon and then returned to the farm. John was a hard working farmer and really enjoyed his cattle, horses and grain farming. In 1974 John retired from the farm and moved to Deloraine. This allowed him more time to participate in curling which was one of the sports he really enjoyed. A few years later John moved to Souris and became a regular avid curler with the Souris Curling Club. He loved curling, excelled in it and was on the team which was Runner-up in the Manitoba Provincial Masters (age 60 and over.) John loved to watch curling at the rink and on TV right up to the time when he was hospitalized. John married Martha Handfield on January 7, 1982 and immediately became Dad and Grandpa! They made their home in Souris and he continued to help friends and family on their farms. Together, John and Martha enjoyed traveling throughout Canada and also spent many afternoons out for a drive touring the countryside or ending up visiting with family. John loved baseball and he and Martha enjoyed following the Souris Blues Ladies Ball team.John was a very kind, polite and considerate man. He was very friendly and helpful to anyone in need. John was very independent and lived on his own in Victoria Park Lodge for the past several years. He had an excellent memory for details and names. He thoroughly enjoyed going to auction sales and visiting with everyone. He was always interested in family and supported them however he could. He will be missed by his family and many friends, including his "coffee buddies" in Souris. John was predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret McMorris, sister-in-law, Bea McMorris, sister and brother- in-law, Marie and George Donald, twin brother and sister- in-law, Bill and Verna McMorris, niece Georgina Hart, and Martha McMorris, his loving wife of 22 years, as well as step-son, Rene Handfield.
