SMITH: It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father Howard B. Smith on March 24, 2012 at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon at the age of 91 years. Howard was born in Brandon, Manitoba on March 31, 1920 and lived there until his passing. Howard was predeceased by his wife Evelyn (nee Earl), father Edward, mother Flora and brother Doyle. He is survived by his son Dennis (Carolyn), son Bradley (Valerie), sister Florence "Dolly", grandchildren Jessica and Michael and grandpets Kayli, Leko, Lady, Cooper and Tippy. Howard spent most of his working life as the owner of Brunswick Billiards on 8th St., and as a motion picture projectionist, at various times working in all of the movie theatres in Brandon. He started his projectionist career in 1945 and continued at this until his retirement from the Strand Theatre in 1991, having sold the pool hall business in 1977. He was a life time member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Machine Operators and earned his Gold Card in 1996 after 50 years with the IA. After retiring from the Strand, he renewed his passion for golf and pursued this sport with the same energy he had previously reserved for work. Spring, summer and fall would find Howard and his golf buddies teeing off at the crack of dawn at the Glen Lea Golf Course. For many summers he also made time to take part in the annual Tamarack Tournament at Clear Lake. On winter vacations he enjoyed golfing with his brother-in-laws, Morris and Eldon in Texas and Hawaii.Howard was a long time member of the Brandon Lions Club and until recently served on the Board of Directors of Lions Manor. From his youth until this past summer, he enjoyed spending time at Clear Lake, in the thirties and forties in the Old Campground, the fifties and sixties with family at his mother's cottage and from the seventies until recently back at the Old Campground again. The family would like to thank the caring staff of Palliative Care Unit at the Assiniboine Centre for their support as Howard's journey through life came to a close. The Funeral Ceremony will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North on Monday, April 9, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood will officiate. A private interment at Rosewood Memorial Gardens will be held after the services. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Howard may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for the Residence - Western Manitoba Cancer Centre, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3. or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Unit 4B - 457 9th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 1K2.
