KIRK: Sadly, after a long fight with cancer, Donald “Butch” Kirk of Hamiota, MB. passed away at his home on May 22, 2012 at the age of 64. Butch was born on June 15, 1947 in Hamiota to parents D.J. & Pat Kirk. After completing school, he worked at Royalite/Gulf as the fuel truck driver for many years. In 1968, he married Audrey Waddell of Cardale & they raised their family of 3 on their farm. Over the years Butch was a volunteer ambulance driver, worked at Crop Insurance and earned his Private Pilot’s license & began flying small aircraft. In 1989 he became the Grader Operator for the R.M. of Hamiota & was still employed there at the time of his death. For many years Butch enjoyed his summers at the family cottage at Burlington Beach at Shoal Lake. Having fun with the family and friends around one of his huge campfires completed his day. In March 2009, Butch was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. He faced his disease with determination and a quiet dignity never complaining. Even after his chemo treatments, he would be back to work the same day. The cancer never slowed him down! He never allowed it to become a huge part of his life and most days we were able to forget it even existed. The strength, courage & positive attitude he consistently displayed in his 3 year long battle with cancer will be an inspiration forever for those close to him. He is survived by his wife, Audrey, sons Jim of Brandon, Ken (Sharla) of Hamiota and daughter Amanda (Mark) Knight of Hamiota as well as grandchildren Brenna, Tara, Destin & Teagan. Also surviving him is his brother Les (Helen & her family); mother-in-law Marguerite Waddell of Calgary; sisters-in-laws Donna Gordon of Winnipeg & Patricia Cameron of Surrey & their families; cousins, aunts & uncles. He was predeceased by his parents Pat (2005) & D.J.(2007) Kirk. A celebration of Butch’s life was held May 28 in the Hamiota Sports Complex with Rev. Rachel officiating. In a private service, Butch was laid to rest on his 65th birthday, June 15, in the Hamiota Cemetary. Campbell’s Funeral Home was in care of the arrangements.
