SHEWCHUK: Pearl Shewchuk (nee Lugowy) October 15, 1917 - June 4, 2012. With sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Pearl Shewchuk beloved mother, grandmother, and great -grandmother at the Sandy Lake Care Home at the age of 94 years. Pearl was born in Brandon, Manitoba on October 15, 1917. In June of 1918, the Lugowy family moved to the Ozerna district to begin farming. Pearl grew up on the family farm with her brothers and sisters and attended Jack Fish Lake School. She was a very good student and enjoyed learning her entire life. However, as was the custom at the time, she left home at an early age to seek employment. On June 10, 1944, Pearl married Michael W. Shewchuk and together they farmed in the Ozerna district. They raised two children: Wesley Michael and Beverley Marie. Michael and Pearl were lifetime members of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ozerna. In the fall of 1977, Pearl moved to Sandy Lake where she continued to live in her home until her move to the Sandy Lake Personal Care Home in the spring of 2009. Pearl will be missed and lovingly remembered by her children Wesley (Liz) Shewchuk and Beverley (Dennis) Duncan, grandchildren Aaron Duncan, Darren (Tania) Shewchuk, Jody-Lynn (Kevin) Boyd, Derek (Megan) Shewchuk and great grandchildren Devin and Kaydence Shewchuk, Jade and Jacob Shewchuk and Sara-Lynn Pearl Boyd. Pearl will be remembered by her sister Olive Clark of Ancaster, Ontario and sister-in-law Helen Lugowy of Hamilton, Ontario. She also leaves to mourn numerous nieces and nephews. Pearl will be fondly remembered by her friends and staff at the Personal Care Home along with her many friends in the Ozerna and Sandy Lake area. Pearl was predeceased by her husband Michael in August of 1972, parents Michael and Palahna Lugowy, sisters: Anne Shewchuk and Mary Mochnacz, brothers: Peter and Andrew Lugowy and brothers-in-law: Steve Shewchuk, Philip Mochnacz and James Clark. Moms focus in life has always been her family. She took great pride in her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and their spouses. She was always interested in their accomplishments and was one of their greatest supporters. Weddings, graduations, birthdays and the holiday seasons were always special to her. Anniversaries and birthdays were never forgotten and we could always look forward to that special card in the mail. Mom loved to bake and it gave her great pleasure to see her grandchildren and great grandchildren enjoy Babas home-made buns and perogies. Another of Moms passions was gardening, where she spent countless hours tending to her flowers and vegetables. She took great joy in sharing the fruits of her labour with her family and friends. Mom was a devout Catholic and member of the Sandy Lake Ukrainian Catholic Womens League. She relied on her faith throughout her life and her faith provided her with great strength and comfort during her final days. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ozerna. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Prayers were said at the church Tuesday evening. Rev. Emil Kardasinec officiated. Pallbearers were Darren Shewchuk, Derek Shewchuk, Kevin Boyd, Aaron Duncan, Tom Mochnacz and Peter Solonyczny. Crossbearer was Devin Shewchuk. If friends so desire donations may be made to the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ozerna, the Palliative Care at the Sandy Lake Personal Care Home or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Moms many friends and neighbours from the Ozerna and Sandy Lake district for the friendship and acts of kindness over the years.
