SPEERS: Leila Frances (nee Fenwick) passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at the Souris Personal Care Home. Leila was born March 8, 1925 in Unity Saskatchewan, the daughter of the late Wilbert and Emma (Smith) Fenwick. She was raised in the Riverview district near Souris, MB and attended Riverview School and Souris Collegiate. After completing high school, Leila was employed by various banks for the next several years. She also held positions at Doig’s, Ted Good Music, and Frank Lawson & Son. Leila married Thomas Speers on August 16, 1951 and they lived in Brandon until 1968, when Tom was transferred to Winnipeg. In 1970 they moved to Duncan B.C. where they purchased a small business. In June of 1973 they moved to Victoria, B.C where Leila worked part time for the Cee Pee Credit Union. In 1985 Tom & Leila retired to Nanaimo, B.C. In 1995 they purchased a condo in Brandon so that they could be closer to family. Tom passed away suddenly in October 1998 and in December of 2000 Leila purchased a condo in Souris. With declining health, she moved to Victoria Park Lodge in 2006 and Souris Personal Care Home in 2009. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years Tom, her only brother Noble and her parents Web & Emma. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Ileen Fenwick, nephews Don (Donna) & Doug (Helen) and families, her brother-in-law and sister-in law David and Olive Speers, nephew Gerald (Glenda) and family. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, May 30th with Rev. Wendy Rankin officiating. Arrangements were with Kowalchuk’s Funeral Home in Souris. In memory of Leila, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
