DOWNES: Wilbert Lawrence. April 30, 1918 -June 17, 2012. Wilbert passed away peacefully at Fairview Home with family at his side. Wilbert was the second youngest child born to Dennis and Sarah Downes (McCoubrey). Wilbert is survived by his children Betty Watt, Bob (Barb) Downes. Grandchildren Cathy (Jeremiah), Colin (Vanessa) and Sarah (Darin). Great-Grandchildren - Tzevi, Xavier, Tyvek, Indiria, Addax and Caeden. Wilbert is also survived by sister Louise Webster and sister- in-law Nell Cooley as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Wilbert worked for farmers in Saskatchewan and Decker, MB. area prior to joining the army. Wilbert returned from serving in World War II in 1945. In 1946 he married Margaret Cooley whom he met while working in the Decker area. They farmed in Birtle, MB for 30 years and retired to Brandon due to health concerns in 1976. Wilbert was an active member of the Golden K Kiwanis and a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. After 48 years of marriage Margaret passed away in 1994. In 1995 Wilbert was married to Olive Bartlett until her passing in 2000. A memorial service was held June 22, 2012 at Trinity United Church with interment at Birtle Cemetery. Rae's Funeral Service of Shoal Lake & Erickson were in charge of arrangements.
