RUDNESKI: Stephen, December 13, 1935 - August 9, 2012. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Steve Rudneski on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Virden District Hospital. He was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa. Steve will be forever missed by his loving wife Shirley of 53 years; sons Wayne (Kim), Bruce (Laurie), Kelly (Cheri) and Kerry (Beckie), his 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, brother Ted (Ivy) Rudneski, sisters Anne Derkach, Eliza Hrushowy, Mary Dobroski, sister-in-law Sylvia (Keith) Liscum and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Steve was born in Basswood, MB and attended school at Weir and Rapid City. In 1959 he married Shirley McKay of Moline, MB and they moved to Virden where they have resided since. Steve worked for Manitoba Hydro in Brandon from 1954 to 1958 and then in Virden from 1958 to 1973. In the fall of 1973 Steve and Shirley purchased the White Owl Service gas station/restaurant and convenience store which they operated until April 1988. In the fall of 1988 they opened the White Owl Sporting Goods and Laundromat which eventually evolved into a car wash and laundromat. Though Steve was involved in running his own business most of his life, his heart was in farming and in recent years as he slowed the business aspect of his life he expanded the farming into essentially a full time career. Steve had many passions, one of which was his love of flying. In 1981 he earned his Private Pilots Licence, built an airstrip, purchased an airplane and flew for the rest of his life. He enjoyed curling, hunting, fishing, traveling and playing musical instruments like his harmonica or fiddle. Steve was also a Charter Member of the Virden Kinsmen Club. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Virden District Hospital and Cancer Care Manitoba for the wonderful care he received. A funeral service was held at St. Pauls United Church in Virden on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 with Reverend Janice Van Aertselaer officiating. An inurnment followed in the Columbarium at Virden Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or to the Virden and Area Palliative Care.
