PICKELL: Leonard Douglas. Born July 23, 1925 in Hamiota, MB, Leonard (Len) passed away peacefully on August 31, 2012 at Broadmead Lodge, Victoria BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Stewart and Emma, and older brother, Cam. He is survived by Fran, his loving wife of 64 years; brother Keith (Fran); children, Doug (Bev) and Jim (Wanda); grandchildren Dave (Tara), Jennifer (Todd); Mark (Linda), Niel (Jen) and Jeff (Katie); and great grandchildren, Devon and Kaylee Pickell, Jack, Nicholas, and Sarah Buchholzer, Imajyn Pickell, and Elanah and Israel Pickell. After serving in the navy during the war, Len married Fran Collins in Brandon MB. In 1959, they moved to Flin Flon, where Len managed the local Liquor Commission until 1985. Len was a well respected and involved community member, particularly with the Sea Cadets and Kinsmen. Like his father, he loved the outdoors, especially being at their cottage and pickerel fishing on Lake Athapap, MB, and returned there each year after retiring to Victoria, BC. Len was a character - strong, determined, and used to being in charge - but under that seemingly tough exterior, he won countless hearts with his gentle warmth- a generous spirit, quick witted sense of humour, and mischievous smile. He made the world a better place, especially for those who truly knew him. He will be greatly missed and cherished forever in many hearts. A private celebration of life will be held for Len. Thanks to all who helped care for Len in the past few years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Broadmead Care Society, 4579 Chatterton Way, Victoria, BC, V8X 4Y7 or to a charity of one's choice. Condolences for the family may be offered at www.mccallbros.com.McCall's of Victoria B.C. (1-800-870-4210).
