HORN: Lloyd Orval Horn, 1921-2012. Lloyd Orval Horn, age 90, beloved husband of Midge, passed away peacefully October 26, 2012 at Virden Health Centre. Lloyd was born November 14, 1921 in the family home in Lenore MB, to James & Albyne Horn. He was the younger brother of sisters Ola & Bessie. Lloyd loved growing up in Lenore, enjoying all the activities, close friends & community, and peacefulness that a small town provides. Lloyd attended Lenore School, graduating in June 1939. In 1942 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he trained to become a pilot. He was stationed in the Middle East during WWII. Lloyd was always proud to have served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion. At the conclusion of the war, Lloyd returned to Lenore. During his time away his father passed away unexpectedly and his mother sold the family hardware store, so Lloyd decided to attend the University of Winnipeg. After one year, his love of small town living called him back to Lenore and he purchased back the Hardware Store. Lloyd and Midge ran the L.O. Horn Hardware and later added the post-office until their retirement in 1985. Upon returning to Lenore he met and married the love of this life Marjorie (Midge) Hunt. They were married on Aug 13, 1949 and were blessed with two children, James and Vicki. Lloyd was an avid sportsman, enjoying baseball, hunting, curling, and golf. He curled both recreationally and had success competitively but is best remembered for his countless volunteer hours helping make the ice and acting as a drawmaster for many, many bonspiels in both Lenore and Virden. He was honored for his dedication to the game by being awarded Life Memberships at both the Virden Curling Club and the Manitoba Curling Association. After retiring Lloyd and Midge purchased a cottage at Clear Lake and it became their second home spending up to half the year there. They have developed many caring and lasting relationships with dear friends in the Clear Lake community. It was at Clear Lake that Lloyd was able to develop a love for the game of golf. He became a member of the Clear Lake Men’s Golf Club and spent many summers enjoying the fun-loving competitiveness and camaraderie with his fellow members as well as playing countless rounds with Midge. In 1992 Lloyd and Midge left the family home in Lenore and moved to Virden purchasing a home there, and later in 1998, moved to Kin Place. Lloyd was a strong individual and with the love, guidance and encouragement from his loving wife Midge, was able to overcome many serious illnesses. Lloyd and Midge were fortunate to enjoy a happy, active retirement together with family and friends. It was a privilege and inspiration to their children and grandchildren to share in their 63 years of marriage. Lloyd enjoyed the company of friends and family and was considered a true gentleman by all who knew him. He had a great sense of humor and was always able to bring a smile to your face. His quiet, steady demeanor truly was admired. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents James & Albyne, sister Bessie Wakley, and brothers-in-law John Wakley and Jim Duncan. Lloyd leaves behind his loving wife Midge, children Jim (Pam) Horn and Vicki (Bob) Caldwell, grandchildren Kelly (Jon) Morrison, Michael Horn (Cheryl Galbraith), Ryan Caldwell, Jennifer (Ryan) Shields, and David Horn (Stephanie Poch), great grandchildren, Brady, Ashton and Maddox Shields and sister Ola Duncan.
