HURD: It is with great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Mildred Bernice Hurd on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the age of 84. Bernice was born in Regina in 1928 to Pearl and Roy McLachlan. She moved to Winnipeg at an early age then came to Brandon in 1944 to work in her father’s accounting firm. After her marriage she was a devoted wife and mother. She loved watching her children grow up and was so proud of their accomplishments. Bernice worked for several years when the children were grown up and after retiring loved to bowl and play golf. Painting, knitting, calligraphy, crafts, and tending to her garden filled her days. Her children fondly remember her renowned baking talents, especially lemon meringue pie, matrimonial cake, chocolate fudge and above all the coffee cookies. There were many children in the neighborhood who were caught with their “fingers in the cookie jar” at the Hurd household. Bernice loved to visit her children whether it was touring the Rockies with her daughter Linda or roasting hot dogs and marshmallows with her son Ray and her grandchildren at Lake Wellman in the Duck Mountains. She also made a few memorable trips to Collingwood, Ontario to visit her brother Jack. Bernice will be lovingly remembered by Lorne, her husband for 67 years, her daughter Linda Kollinger (Wayne) of Calgary, son Ray (Patsy), Brandon, sister Vivian Hamilton (Dean) Brandon, brother Jack of Collingwood, Ontario, special niece Pat McKinnon (Frank) of Winnipeg, granddaughters Dr. Carmen Hurd (Bret) and Carey Whelpton (Jeff) of Winnipeg and great-granddaughters Anna and Natalie Whelpton. She was predeceased by her parents Roy and Pearl, her brothers Harold and Gordon, sisters Gwen Pratt, Ruth Shearer and Gladys Woods. At Bernice’s request a private burial and a family celebration of her life will take place in the near future. Arrangements by Memories Chapel of Brandon. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Fairview Home for all their love, care and support over the past three years - You are all angels.
