MARTIN: Doreen Elaine. Doreen passed away peacefully with her children by her side at the Rosedale Hospice in Calgary, AB on December 21, 2012 at the age of 80 years. She was born on March 14, 1932 on a farm near Lake Alma, SK. In September 1937 she moved with her Mom and Dad and seven siblings by train to the Houston District of MB. At the age of 17 she took a hairdressing course in Kenora, ON and set up a successful salon in Reston, MB. She later moved to Portage la Prairie, MB to continue her hairdressing career. She married Gordon Russell on September 1, 1962 in Melita, MB where she and Gordon worked at the family business, Russell Electric. On February 27, 1965 twins Rodney and Karla were born. In 1967 they moved to Roblin, MB where they owned and operated the Saturn Hotel until 1970 when they moved to Killarney, MB, still in the hotel business. In 1976 they moved to Brandon, MB and bought the Western Motel. Gordon passed away suddenly in 1978 at the age of 52. Doreen continued to operatethe business for a few more years then sold. She married Hugh Martin in 1996 and sadly, he passed away March 28, 1997. In June 1998 Doreen moved to Calgary, where her children resided. In Calgary she enjoyed her family, golf, baking and giving to others. She is survived by her children Rodney and Karla (Trevor Brooks); brothers Clair (Dorothy), Vilas (Vivian) and Duane (Sharon); sister Wanda (Jim Lees) as well as nieces, nephews and friends. Doreen was predeceased by her parents Levi and Elsie Anderson; husbands Gordon and Hugh; brothers Earl, Hilton and Bud and sisters Florence and June. She will be remembered for her free spirit, zest for life, good food and laughter around the kitchen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Rosedale Hospice, 920 -7A Street NW, Calgary, AB T2M 3J3 or to a charity dear to your heart. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Brockie Donovan Funeral Home, 332 – 8th Street, Brandon, MB with interment to follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.
