ZATYLNY: Dan Zatylny passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Sandy Lake Personal Care Home on January 23, 2013 after a long and fulfilling life. He will be lovingly remembered by his best friend and wife of 63 years Anne, his children: Sharon (Reg), Larry (Marie), and Audrey, grandchildren: Cindy, Dean (Robin and Jordyn), Laura, Marsha (Pat), Scott, Jason, Richelle and great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kyra. He is survived by sisters Caroline Bachewich and Lucia Zatylny and brother Mike (Doreen) and numerous nieces and nephews. Dan was born April 28, 1924 on the home farm near Erickson to Tomasz and Aniela Zatylny. Dan attended Jackfish school until the age of fifteen when he quit to help on the family farm. Over the next few years he worked at various jobs including a hired hand on a farm, cement finishing, trucking, logging (with a Swede saw), and playing violin in a band (one of his favourite activities). In 1947 Dan embarked full time in his lifelong career of farming. During the coming years he cleared and broke many acres of land involving hours of backbreaking labour. One of his first tractors was a new two bottom Ferguson in 1948 and his last new tractor was a 1086 International in 1979. He kept up with many of the major changes in farming over the years. While playing in his band (Slim and the Woodchoppers) Dan met Anne Sokal, the love of his life and they married in 1949. In 1955 they purchased Anne's parents land and moved there from the farm south of Erickson. Over the years he acquired more land and raised their family. In 1995 they moved to their cottage on the shores of Sandy Lake when their son Larry took over the family farm. Dan and Anne spent many winters travelling in the southern US and chose Arizona as their winter home. His hours on the shuffleboard court earned him a few trophies for the shelf. Dan was active in many community organizations including the Roman Catholic Church, St. Anthony's cemetery, Sandy Lake Co-op, Sandy Lake Credit Union, Manitoba Pool Elevators and was a councillor for the RM of Harrison. Wherever Dan went he made new friends. He taught his children his love of music and dancing and also how to play a decent game of cribbage. Dan enjoyed his family and especially watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren growing up. He will be missed by his many friends and relatives. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jude’s Roman Catholic Church, Erickson. Interment will follow at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Cemetery at Jackfish with lunch in Jackfish Hall. Prayers will be at St. Jude's Church Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. Rev.
