JOHNS: Edith Edna (nee Dyer) formerly of Kenton, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at Birch Lodge, Hamiota, on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. Edith was born in Melita, Manitoba on January 30, 1918 to Herbert and Juliana Dyer. She took her education there, graduating from grade 12. She then pursued her teachers training in Brandon Normal School in 1938. She devoted 22 years of her teaching career to Daly Union School, Rivers, Spring Valley, and Kenton. On December 26, 1942 Edith married George Johns and in 1946 they had a son, Philip. They farmed in the Tarbolton and Bradwardine area, later moving to Kenton. She was a humble, community minded woman. In addition to her years of devotion to her students served on many boards: Kenton Chamber of Commerce, Kenton Leisure Club, Westman Senior Council and Kenton UCW. She was also involved in establishing affordable senior housing in her community. Edith was predeceased by her son, Philip in 1971, her husband George 1985, brother Fred 1987 and her sister Julie in 2008. She is survived by Alex Johns nephew-in-law, Ivey Wyeth niece-in-law, cousins Ted and Slegah Evans and Ken and Mary Taylor, all of England. A service to celebrate Ediths life was held at Kenton United Church on Saturday, January 19th. Interment was held at Tarbolton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Craig Whyte, Blair Fordyce, Denis Carter, Bob Harvey, Reed Wolfe and Ralph Mawer. Donations may be made in Ediths memory to Birch Lodge Personal Care Home, Hamiota, MB, R0M 0T0 or to Kenton United Church, Kenton, MB R0M 0Z0.
