SOWIAK: On a brilliant sunny day, Ruth Freda Carla Sowiak (nee Gartz), passed away quietly and joined her loving husband Rudy in eternal rest on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 75 years of age. Ruth is survived by her son Todd (Michelle, and her children Chelci, Shelby, Derek); daughter Caroline (Tom), as well as her cherished grandchildren Kendall and Matthew. She will be lovingly remembered by her twin brother Rudolf (Kathy), sister Antolena and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruth was predeceased by her parents Olga and August; sisters: Clara (Gus), Hulda (Pete), Olga (Alec); brother-in-law William, and husband Rudy. Born July 27, 1937 in Herbert, Saskatchewan, Ruth attended Turnhill School, and grew up on the family farm near Rush Lake in Prairie View, Saskatchewan. She moved to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where she worked as a Nurse’s Aide for several years. Ruth would speak of her time there with great pride and happiness. Ruth moved to Manitoba where she had numerous cousins. She worked in Seven Sisters at a Hydro Staff House doing various duties. She then moved to Winnipeg and worked at King George’s Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide. While in Winnipeg, Ruth was introduced to her future husband, Rudy, in 1963. They were married on October 24, 1964 at Peace Lutheran Church in Prairie View, Saskatchewan. Their married life began on the family farm, Fairview Farm, near Nesbitt, Manitoba. Together they built their family home and farmed for forty-six years until Rudy sadly passed away in 2010. Ruth loved being busy in the home, as well as outside. She loved to entertain friends and family with homemade meals and delicious baking. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafting, baking, square dancing, and travelling. In between all of these interests she would help on the farm and maintain their beautiful yard with immense pride! Ruth was full of mischief and laughter, quiet strength, and never remained in one spot longer than necessary. She missed Rudy so much when he passed, and found life less full without him. We hope they have found each other once again. We will miss all of the special things she did for each one of us. Heartfelt thank you’s are extended to Dr. Stone, Marlene Cory, and to all the caring and considerate staff at Souris Hospital. Thank You to Darlene Yurchuk and Muriel Boake for their friendship and devoted caring! The family deeply appreciates all the kind words, thoughts, and support extended to us during this sad time. Funeral Service took place at Memories Chapel on Thursday, January 31, 2013. Pastor Jason Zinko of Redeemer Lutheran Church officiated. Interment followed at Minnewawa Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Ruth may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 3-824 18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 5B7.
