SANDILANDS: Alistair McMorran Sandilands of Birtle Manitoba passed away on Wednesday February 6, 2013 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 74. Alistair was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1938. His father John was a policeman, and his mother Agnes a nurse, and lived in Annan. His parents decided to become farmers and on his 9th birthday moved to Glenzier Head farm where he and his brother David continued to farm after his dad's retirement. Alistair married Kathleen Murray in 1968 and started a family, sons Robin, and twins Kenneth & Keith (deceased). In 1983 the family moved to Birtle to continue farming until retirement in 2008. Alistair and Kathleen quickly made many friends in the Birtle area. Alistair's hobbies included badminton, golfing, curling, bird watching, walking and being outdoors. Alistair served on the Birtle hospital board and the Manitoba Pool elevator board in Solsgirth. He also was a badminton coach at Birtle Collegiate Institute. As an avid reader he always had multiple books on the go and would read anything that was non-fiction. The family would like to thank friends for their support especially over the last year. Alistair was predeceased by his parents John and Agnes McMorran, and brother Robert. Survived by his wife Kathleen, his son Robin (Maureen Kennedy) and granddaughters Erica, Karine, and Nicole; and son Kenneth, brother David, nephews Ian, David and Scott, and nieces Alison, and Helen. The funeral service was held in the Birtle United Church, on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Elaine Dixon officiating. Interment followed in the Birtle Cemetery. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Braendle-Bruce Funeral Service of Russell were in care of arrangements.
