BURNS: Barbara Joan. October 24, 1929 – March 29, 2013. On March 29, 2013 Barbara Joan Burns (nee Smith), of Langley BC, passed away after a long illness. Joan was born in Toronto on October 24, 1929 and lived in Long Branch. She married Peter Burns on September 4, 1953 and they were together for 59 years. Joan worked as an operator for Bell Telephone until she and Peter started their family in 1956 when she then turned her attention to raising their two boys. She enjoyed sewing and needlepoint. She was actively involved in volunteering at the local school as a librarian and with the Boys Scouts as an Auxiliary Volunteer. The family moved to Brandon Manitoba in 1975 where Joan became a driving instructor to high school students. She often spoke of the fine young men and women she instructed. Active in charitable work she chaired the Rotary Women’s Committee. Joan spent the last 20 years researching her family tree. She embraced the internet at age 69 and through her genealogy research made friends all over the world. Joan is survived by her loving family husband Peter; sons Raymond (Luanne) and Richard (Janice); grandsons Taylor, Jason, Cameron and Ian. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association. The family wishes to thank the staff of Langley Memorial Hospital for their loving care.
