JOHNS: Kathrine “Kay” Johns. Kay peacefully passed away on April 4, 2013, at the age of 77 years. Kay was born in Plum Coulee, Manitoba, to parents Helena and Daniel Penner. She was the youngest of eight children, and was raised in Gretna, Manitoba, before moving to Winnipeg as a young adult. In Winnipeg, she met Mansur Johns, and together they had daughters Michele and Candice. After having children, Kay worked for 28 years as a Nurses Aid at the St. Amant Centre. In her retirement, Kay continued her devotion to caring for others, and continued as a nanny to several families until her illness in fall of 2012. Though no longer married, Kay and Manny remained close, and frequently travelled together to visit their daughters and grandchildren. Kay is survived by her sister Ruth of Virden, Manitoba, daughters Michele (Glen) Daniel living in Toronto, and Candice (Derek) Cullen, living in Brandon. Kay was a proud grandmother to her four grandchildren, Mackenzie, Reece, Alexa and Ava. Kay had a flair for style and crafts, and always looked her best. She loved to decorate and keep up her condo in style. She loved to spoil her grandchildren, knitting for them or showering them with love and gifts. Kay was a great cook and loved to entertain family at home, always ready with baking or a treat for the kids. Unfortunately, Kay was stricken by brain cancer in fall of 2012, but she never complained, and maintained her sense of humor, positive outlook and brave face for family throughout. She spent her last months living with family in Brandon, until moving to palliative care. She passed away peacefully, with both daughters at her side. The family was grateful for the care and support of the tremendous and caring staff on the Palliative Care Unit at the Assiniboine Center in Brandon, and would like to thank Drs.Visser, Kaiser and Butler for their care for Kay, and their friendship along the way. Kay is interred at Thomson In The Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivary Blvd, Winnipeg. At Kay’s request, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
