MARSHALL: David Roy Marshall. Dave died on April 27, 2013 at the BRHC. He died in my arms and was surrounded in love by his daughter and son-in-law. Dave was born on March 30th, 1947 in Nova Scotia. Being an Air Force “brat” his family lived in numerous places, including Paris, France, Halifax, and Sudbury. Dave followed in his dad’s footsteps and joined the Air Force. He was posted to many places during his career, including Foymont, QC, Comox, BC, Gypsumville, MB, Cornwallis, NS and Shilo, MB. He was a PERI and served for twenty-two years. When he retired he worked for a short time at the Shilo Country Club. He was then hired on at BCE and worked for Roads & Grounds. He then retired from the Public Service and was hired as the Facilities Manager at Shilo for CFPSA. Dave retired for the final time when he turned sixty. During his military career Dave was very proud of the time he worked at the Montreal Olympics. He made many wonderful friends throughout these years. Dave met me when he moved to Shilo. We hit it off right away, he had such a wonderful sense of humor, he always had me laughing. We were married in December 1984 and had a mighty good life. He was a great dad to Kate, but he was the best Papa to Brandon, Ella and Emme. Jeff (our son-in-law) was like the son he never had. He was so supportive of our grandchildren, especially when it came to sports. We might be a little richer financially, well, maybe a lot richer, today if we had the money we spent on hockey, soccer, and softball, but it wouldn’t hold a candle to the riches we have from supporting our grandkids in their sporting endeavors. He also loved to watch his granddaughters dance at their recitals. When I retired, we decided to buy a cabin at Clear Lake. That was one of the best decisions we ever made. There have been so many wonderful memories made there. Dave had finally bought himself his fishing boat and was looking forward to spending time at the lakes in the area. He was so looking forward to spending time on the deck soaking up the sunshine. If ever there was a person who loved the sun it was him! Dave was diagnosed the cancer in February of 2012. He had a pretty tough year, having three surgeries, a blood clot in his lung, and a bleeding ulcer. He was a real fighter though, and was bound and determined he was going to beat it. In the end, it was a fall that took his life. The chemotherapy caused him to have a hard time with his balance, and he fell at home on April 25th, but wouldn’t go to the hospital. He had to stay home and watch his beloved Ottawa Senators play. He finally agreed to go to the hospital, but it was too late. He slipped into a coma shortly after getting there and died peacefully. Dave is survived by his wife Cathie, daughter Kate, son (in-law) Jeff Switzer, grandchildren Brandon, Isabella, and Emmalee. He’s also survived by his brother Gary and partner Heather, brother Mike, his nieces Melodie (Mike and Maya), Natalie (Danny, Chelsea and Dylan), Danielle (daughter Gwendolyn) and nephew Mike. He’s also survived by my brothers Alf and wife Linda, Joe and wife Debbie and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Cec and Mary (Hatt) Marshall. There will be a private interment of Dave’s ashes on May 11. We would like to invite everyone that knew him to a casual come and go celebration of his life at the Monterey Estates Recreation Centre, May 11 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice. Messages of condolence may be placed at www.memorieschapel.comThe canoe was by the river,The oars were by its side,The fishing rod was laid to rest at this the eventide. The shore he walks along The sand beneath his feetBelongs now in his new home, His journey here complete. We know he’s in a better placeWhere no there is no painWhere the eagle meetsthe morning skyAnd the rainbow ends the rain.
