PROST: Ivy Louise Prost passed away July 28, 2013 at the Assiniboine Centre, in Brandon, following a short hospital stay. Ivy was born June 9, 1922 at the family farm NE 32-11-19 Elton Municipality. She received her education at Powerville School until grade nine, and later had Secretarial training. She spent the first while working for neighboring farm ladies doing housework, during busy harvest and canning season. She joined the Army at 17, in November. 1942, becoming a Departmental Clerk and earned the rank of Sergeant. Her discharge came in March 1946. During her time in the services, Ivy met another service man, Joseph Prost, who later became her husband. They were married in Forrest Church September 17, 1949 and they lived and worked in Winnipeg until they and some friends relocated to San Diego, California in 1959. Their years spent in the USA were happy times working and enjoying baseball games and going to the Legion, and entertaining family members on vacation from Canada. After nearly 40 years they returned to Canada in 1995 and settled in Brandon, where they were welcomed by family members here, and they learned to adapt to our Manitoba climate. Ivy kept in touch with her large family circle and friends, and kept busy by reading and doing crafts and knitting. She needlepoint pictures and tablecloths, as well as her knitted slippers, socks, sweaters and toques, are treasured keepsakes for everyone. The last few years she knit mittens for charity, and almost reached her goal of 200 pair for Christmas in 2012, and already had a box full for this year, to try to do better. Ivy was a tidy person and liked to look her best at all times. She enjoyed eating out, shopping and having her hair done each week. We all laughed when we were told that she insisted on having her usual hairdo before she would go to the hospital with a broken kneecap! Ivy enjoyed all sports on TV, and kept up on current events and weather reports. She made friends with the residents at The Towers where she lived, looking forward to going down for coffee twice weekly. She had kept her Legion membership intact, and often went to the meat draws when Joe was here. Ivy is survived by two sisters, Edith (Bill) Docking, Teulon, MB, Betty (Bill) Witter, Vernon, BC and a brother Ernie (Gwen) Hickson, Brandon, MB and a sister-in-law Gail Hickson, Brandon, MB and many nieces and nephews scattered across Canada and the USA. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Prost in 2007 and by her parents Harry and Elizabeth Hickson, hers sisters Mabel (George) Croy, Evelyn (Alf) Anderson, Brandon, MB and Connie (Jock) McDougall, Nanton, AB and brothers Donald (Elaine) Lethbridge, AB, Lorne (Byng) (Norma), and Kenneth (Gail) Hickson. A graveside funeral was held in the Veterans Section of the Brandon Cemetery on Thursday, August 1, at 11:00 a.m. with her niece Colleen Gareau officiating, with family members in attendance. Urnbearer was nephew Darcy Hickson. Legion members formed a honor guard and ceremony and placed poppies at the finish of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Brandon Humane Society or the charity of your choice.
