VERMEERSCH: It is with sadness that the family of Isabel Harriet Vermeersch announces that her death occurred on September 22, 2013 at Fairview Home, with her family by her side. Born in Brandon on December 2, 1924 to Harry and Sylvia Askin, Isabel attended Orange Hall School and Brandon Collegiate. She worked at the Brandon Mental Health Centre. While attending a dance with a girl friend, Isabel met Emil Vermeersch one of the many soldiers training in Brandon. They were married November 1944 and lived in Langenburg, Saskatchewan, where their daughter Joan was born. Moving to Justice, Manitoba in the fall of 1945, they farmed until their retirement in 1978 when they moved to Brandon. Mom was a gracious hostess with many functions being held in the family home, the camper at Sportsman’s Park and then the cabin at Clear Lake. She was a homemaker and a farm wife spending time preparing meals for her family and for anyone else that happened to arrive there before, during, or after a meal. You never left hungry! Isabel was a Member of the W.I. , Legion Ladies Auxillary where she held the office of treasurer for over 23 years, UCW, Justice Curling Club and the Riverview Curling Club. Mom loved to dance which she was still doing until two weeks before she passed away. Quite often at the Steppin’ Out Dances, she was part of the family group with her daughter, granddaughter, and great granddaughters making four generations. Left to cherish Isabel’s memory are: her daughter Joan and her partner Milt Sedgwick; granddaughter Cindy Curry (Brent) and their children Jordan and Randi; grandson Neil Wallace (Nancy) and their children Cassandra (Tom), Danielle and Logan. She was predeceased by her parents Harry and Sylvia Askin; husband Emil of 58 years; sister Hanna McCallum and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephew. The Ceremony to Celebrate Isabel’s life was held at Memories Chapel, on Thursday, September 26, 2013 with Rev. Barb Jardine officiating. Private family interment was held at Sparling Cemetery. Urn bearers were grandchildren Cindy Curry and Neil Wallace. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Isabel may be made to Fairview Home, 1351 13th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4S6 or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415 – 1st Street, Brandon, MB R7A 2W8.
