VICKERY: It is with profound sadness, we announce the passing of Gerald Gordon Vickery, born April 10, 1935 Oct 8, 2013, after a great fight against cancer. The day he was diagnosed he told Brenda that he had, had worse news in 65 years of farming and he would fight it. Gerry was born and raised in Hamiota with the exception of a few years the family lived in Oak River. He spent most of his years on the farm three miles west of Hamiota, where he continued the tradition of grain farming and cattle farming. Gerry married Roberta Blackwell of Harding and they had two children Brenda and Ken. He leaves to mourn Roberta his wife of 54 years, son Ken (Lorraine), daughter Brenda (Dave), grandson Ryan (Kirstin), great grandson Ethan. Sister Nora Shier, brother Doug (Judy), brother-in-law Dick Hills and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Lois and Gordon, sister Evelyn Hills, sister and brother-in-law Sheila and Frank Thiede, brother-in-law Gerald Shier, two nephews Vince and Gordon Shier, sister-in-law Velda Vickery. He was also predeceased by his mother and father-in-law Robert and Jean Blackwell and sister-in-law Lillian Blackwell. Gerry enjoyed curling, even attending a few briers and a World Championship. He loved getting out to the coffee shop and being with the men. A great couple of days was when he was able to get away to Lake of the Prairies fishing or in November, when his son-in-law Dave came out to deer hunt with Gerry. Another favourite pastime was going to auction sales. We were never sure if it was the auction sale he was going to or the lemon pie and coffee! The birthday gang gatherings in various locations with a nice supper and a game of cards were always special moments for Gerry. In the last couple months, Gerry enjoyed more frequent visits with his brother Doug and sister Nora; often just popping in to their homes for a conversation and cup of coffee. Gerry was a wonderful husband and father and a great provider. A graveside service was held for family and other relatives at the Hamiota Cemetery on Saturday, Oct 12 at 11:00am with Rev. Rachel Robinson officiating. A luncheon followed for all his friends to celebrate his life at the Hamiota Community Centre at 11:30am. Len and Ev Allan attended the register book. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Gerrys memory to the Hamiota & District Sports Complex Memorial Fund, Box 100, Hamiota, MB, R0M 0T0 or the Hamiota District Health Centre, Hamiota, MB, R0M 0T0.
