ROBERTSON: Muriel Margaret Robertson passed away peacefully with family by her side at Valleyview Care Centre on Sunday, November 24, 2013. Muriel was born on the family farm near Minto on July 2, 1926. She finished her grade school and then went on to teaching school in Winnipeg, returning afterwards to teach in Pinkham, MB for a few years. Muriel married Harold on October 20, 1945. They moved to Minto where they had three sons – Mervyn, Lawrence and Dennis. Six months after Dennis was born the family moved to Brandon. Mavis was born in Brandon a few years later. Mom and Dad lived in the same house for more than 50 years. Muriel worked at Eaton’s Department store for many years in various positions, most of those years spent in the receiving area. She later worked as a sales clerk and switchboard operator. Muriel and Harold really loved to dance. They were Square and Round dancers with the Circle 8’s Dance Club. They made many long lasting friendships through dancing, many of whom they would meet at the jamborees held all over the country. For family vacations they would pack the family in the car and drive across the prairies to the mountains to attend the Peach Festival Jamboree in Penticton, B.C. While there they would spend the week with family and friends. Once the kids grew up, Mom and Dad loved to travel south to Desert Hot Springs. They made many lasting friendships and enjoyed the swimming, dancing and socializing. Mom loved to knit and crochet. She made many beautiful baby outfits for all the grandkids. When they grew up she made each one of them an afghan. In later years, she started doing plastic canvas. These included picture frames, calendars, Kleenex holders and many different Christmas decorations. Mom was an avid gardener. She would spend hours tending her flowers and vegetables. It was common for her to plant 48 tomato plants along with all the other veggies. They always grew enough to share with the family. Mom was a great cook and loved to bake. We all looked forward to Sunday suppers. We all had our favorites that she made when we visited. She made great apple pie and her Christmas pudding was to die for. Every year on the first day of strawberry picking (no matter how hot it was) Mom and Dad would go out and pick a least ten pails. They would then go back home and make their famous strawberry jam. They always made enough to share with the family. Muriel leaves to mourn her passing – Mervyn (Terri), their son Jason (Breanna), great grandchild Keira and daughter Tamara – Lawrence (Theresa), son Chanse (Heidi) and daughter Cyndall – Dennis (Tunde), daughter Carrie (Adam) and son Daniel – Mavis (Russell), son Andy and daughter Amy Van Buskirk. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Harold. We would like to thank all those who attended the funeral and who sent cards and food. We appreciated it greatly. A tremendous thank you to all the girls at Valleyview Care Centre for their care of mom and the family – you are an amazing group. A celebration of Muriel’s life was held at Memories Chapel on Thursday, November 28, 2013. A private family interment took place at Margaret Cemetery.
