BRUCE: Doris Ellen Bruce (nee Penelton). August 22, 1925 - November 22, 2013. Passed away peacefully at the Hamiota Health Centre with her daughters by her side. Doris is survived by her daughters Marilyn Bruce and Cathy (Phil) Fafard, grandchildren Philip, Cateline, Luke and Aimée; sister Merl (Colin) Cory, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George, her parents Robert and Ellen Penelton, brother Arthur and sister-in-law Helen, in-laws George and Catherine Bruce and special daughter, Haydee Smeets. Doris was born at Willen, Manitoba, moving to Miniota with her father, brother, and sister in 1933 following the death of her mother. She married George Bruce in 1948, and except for a brief stay at the Bruce farm, she lived in Miniota for the rest of her life, spending 80 years in the house on Railway Ave S. She played an active role in the community as an avid curler, supporter of the Miniota Figure Skating Club and the Fine Arts Festival, and was a proud member of the UCW. Once her beloved grandchildren came along, spending time with them became a big part of her life as she attended many sporting events and made many trips to Brandon and Dauphin. In later years, she became known as the “historian” of the community by all who knew her as she could produce bits of information seemed long forgotten. While she gave much to her community, she also received much from all her friends and neighbors. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Hamiota Health Centre for all the care and kindness extended to our mother and ourselves over the last several years. We also would like to thank the Miniota First Responders and Virden Ambulance Service for their care, concern and professionalism. A celebration of Doris’s life will be held on May 24, 2014 at the Miniota United Church, with fellowship to follow. Private interment will take place at that time at the Miniota Cemetary. Campbell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doris’s memory to the Hudson Suite, c/o Hamiota District Health Centre, Hamiota, MB, R0M 0T0; Miniota and Area Foundation, Box 70, Miniota, MB, R0M 1M0 or to a charity of your choice.Messages of condolence and/or photos can be shared via the obituary at www.campbellfuneralhome.ca
