CHRISTISON: Annie Sophia passed away at Carberry Personal Care Home on January 8, 2014 at the age of ninety-eight years. Sophia was born at Carberry, Manitoba on May 2, 1915, the second daughter of Tom and Ina (Budge) Kirkness. She attended school in Carberry and Brookdale. On November 16th, 1939 Sophia married Jim Christison and they celebrated 65 years of marriage together. Sophia was a homemaker; she was raised on a farm and married a farmer. Back in those days, along with her mother, she milked cows, raised chickens, grew a large garden along with all the other work that farm wives did at the time. Sophia always loved to bake and over the many years, family, friends and visitors certainly enjoyed the goodies she produced! Another favorite activity was gardening. As long as she was able she enjoyed growing large beds of beautiful flowers. Many of the beds included pink petunias, marigolds, geraniums - the old fashioned flowers that she preferred. She and Jim welcomed family, friends and passers-by to their yard to enjoy the beauty of the blooms. A huge vegetable garden wasnt forgotten and the resulting veggies were shared by many. Sophia also like to go for drives to visits friends and gardeners or to share a game of cards or a cup of tea. Although Sophia and Jim has no children of their own they treated their nieces and nephews as well as many adopted nieces and nephews as their own. Sophia was predeceased by her husband, Jim in 2005, her parents Tom and Ina Kirkness, older sister Lily and brother-in-law Jack Anderson of the Shetland Isles, brother-in-law Bill Christison and sister-in-law Edith Christison, brother-in-law Hutton Christison, and brother-in-law Art Schellenberg. Sophia is survived by her younger sister Edith Christison, and sister-in-law- Lily Schellenberg as well as numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews in Canada, the United States and Shetland Isles. Funeral Service was held January 14, 2014 at Knox-Zion Presbyterian Church with Rev Minho Yoo officiating. Interment was in Carberry Plains Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Carberry Personal Care Home Activities Program, Box 2000, Carberry, MB R0K 0H0 or to a charity of choice.
