CORY: Cora Helen (nee Cunningham) of Wawanesa, MB, passed away at the Wawanesa Nursing Home on Thursday, January 23, 2014 with many of her family at her side. Helen was born January 1, 1912 and celebrated her 102nd birthday just recently. Helen was born in the R.M. of Oakland, the youngest of eight children to Emerson and Elizabeth Cunningham. Her mother died when Mom was five years old, her older sisters and brother along with her father, raised her on the farm. She attended school in Nesbitt, Carroll and Wawanesa and then stayed home to care for her father and help on the farm. She met our father, Glenn Cory, of the Chesley district and they were married in 1934 and started farming and remained on the farm until the early 1970s and then they rented the farm and moved to Wawanesa where they purchased a home on 1st Street. To this marriage two sons were born, Wayne (Donna) and Daryl (Kim). Mom was very interested in her home with gardening, raising chickens and turkeys and in her community where they lived between Chesley School and Chesley Church. She was active in the Chesley and Wawanesa UCW and held various positions including president and secretary. She was the first president of New Horizons in Wawanesa, was a member of the Wawanesa Rebeccas and was a life member of the Wawanesa Museum. She enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels and volunteered for many years at the Wawanesa Nursing Home. Following our Dads passing in 1983, Mom lived in the home for many years, and then moved in to Valley Lodge in Wawanesa and enjoyed many years there tending her flowers and visiting with the residents. 2010 found her in poor health and at the age of 98 moved into the nursing home. There she enjoyed the good care and good meals and watching the birds out her window into the garden area. Mom was predeceased by her father and mother, six sisters, Evelyn (Charles Little), Ettie (Carl Eamer), Ella (Frank Parker), Mildred (Bruce Telford), Muriel (Russell Jones), Hazel (Bob Cathers), and her brother Liskum Cunningham (Nancy), her brothers-in-law Lloyd (Anne) Cory, Elmer Henderson, and sister-in-law Marjorie (Scott Burnett), and her father-in-law Milton Cory. She is survived by her son Wayne (Donna), Daryl (Kim), grandchildren, Brad Cory (Lynn), Todd Cory (Sheila), Shawna (Jarett Ketcheson), Dustin Cory (EJ), great-grandchildren, Kristin, Braeden, Joel, Hayley, Kayden and Cameron. Also many nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. A celebration of Moms life was held at Wawanesa United Church on January 30, 2014. Cremation took place and burial will take place at the Methven Cemetery near Wawanesa at a later date. Her great-grandson Braeden Cory was urnbearer. Her family would like to thank those who attended the service and especially thank Jamiesons Funeral Home of Glenboro for their professional services. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Moms memory to the Wawanesa and District Pool Inc. Fund, Box 427, Wawanesa, MB, R0K 2G0, or to a charity of choice.
