WIENS: Jean. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Jean Wiens. Jean passed away on January 19, 2014 at the Virden Hospital after a short illness. Jean was born May 24, 1923 to Jack and Jane Dickie and grew up in the Miniota area, living on different farms and going to school in Miniota and Beulah. Upon graduating high school she attended Normal School in Brandon and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Virden and McCreary. While teaching in McCreary she met a young man by the name of John Wiens and they were married after he came home from war. They lived on a farm at Kemnay and then moved to a farm at Miniota. They moved into Miniota in 1960 and Jean started teaching there shortly after that. She retired from teaching in the late 1970s and worked at Goulter School as a resource teacher when they moved to Virden in the fall of 1979. While in Virden, they joined the Good Sam Club and they had many great camping experiences with good friends with common interests. They spent quite a few winters in Phoenix. After John had a health scare, they decided to stay in Canada for the winters and picked Penticton as the place to stay. They also had trips to Scotland, England, Alaska and Holland. Jean was active in the UCW in Miniota when they lived there and she carried on to help out at Virden. She always enjoyed working at the spring rummage sale. She loved to visit and was always pleased when someone dropped in for coffee. She took hardanger classes and knit sweaters for newborn babies in Africa. She played cards at the New Horizon Centre. She was a member of the lawn bowling club. If she wasnt otherwise occupied, she would work on puzzles and crosswords from the paper. When she was younger, Jean loved to dance and would dance every night of the week if she could. She took advantage of trips offered through the SAIL program. She loved to go shopping and really missed the spontaneous trips that she and John used to go on. Jean is survived by daughters Pat (Mac) Lelond and Marilyn (Rob) Warkentin; grandchildren Tracy (Nick) Young, Jody (Ken) Still, Duncan (Kristen) Lelond, Jeff Warkentin, Steven (Jill) Warkentin and Chris (Melissa) Warkentin; great-grandchildren Mikaela and Jessica Young; Brandon, Geordan, Dannika and Conan Still; Daryin Lelond; Chelsea, Cole, Ashleigh, Damon, Tyler, Madelyn and Emily Warkentin; siblings Maud Bryant and Bob (Gladys) Dickie; brothers and sisters-in-law Manno and Helen Wiens, Edgar and Ridia Wiens, Emma Wiens and numbers nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband John Wiens; parents Jack and Jane Dickie; brothers-in-law Les Bryant, Harry Wiens, Harry Rand and Elmer Wiens; sisters-in-law Anne Rand and May Wiens. A celebration of her life was held at St. Pauls United Church on January 25, 2014 with a service prepared by the family. Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Miniota Cemetery next to her husband John, at a later date. Donations in Jeans memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
