With family by her side, Eleanor Margaret Sedgwicks life journey ended on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at the age of 89 years, Hamiota, MB. She will be sadly missed by her husband of 66 years, Thomas, daughters Sandra Todd (Barry)Winnipeg, Marlene Smith (Allan), Hamiota; grandchildren Stacey Wan (Carl), Ottawa Heather Flett, (Tristan) Winnipeg, Kent Smith, (Yvonne), Winnipeg, and Michael Smith, (Kim) Brandon, along with great- grandchildren Audrey Wan, Adrian & Brady Flett, Kennedy &Mikaela Smith, and her sister Mary Hamilton, Carnduff, SK. She was predeceased by her parents, Gus and Olive Shier and infant grandson Mark Smith. Eleanor was born Nov. 26, 1924, and raised on the family farm at Carnduff, SK. She journeyed to Winnipeg to continue her education at Angus Business College. While in Winnipeg she met her future husband, Tom. They were married in the evening of June 26th, 1947, at Young United Church, Winnipeg. Five years later, Tom and Eleanor left their city jobs to pursue their dream of farming. They returned to the Hamiota area where Tom was raised. While farming, Tom and Eleanor were a true partnership. Tom excelled at crop production while Eleanor managed the farm accounts and household. Their success was built on a foundation of hard work and determination. Once the children were in school, Eleanor worked as a legal secretary in Hamiota. Even so she always found the time to maintain an immaculate home, grow a bountiful garden, and nurture lovely flower gardens. She loved the frequent visits of grandchildren who have fond memories of those visits, including games of checkers and monopoly, rounds of golf and fun days at Hamiota Fair. She also enjoyed entertaining and socializing with friends and neighbours. In her spare time she loved to knit and read. Eleanor was well known for being efficient and for being able to get the job done. She believed that there was a place for everything and everything should be in its place. Eleanor was an avid traveller and together she and Tom visited many parts of Canada as well as many countries in Europe and beyond, including their favourite destination of Australia where they enjoyed extended winter vacations in later years. Eleanor contributed to her community through various roles with the Grace Rebekah Lodge, Red Cross Society, United Church Womens Group, and for establishing the Hamiota Donors Choice - a method of raising funds for charities which is still in use today. For the past four years, due to progression and complications of Parkinsons disease, Eleanor resided at Birch Residence Personal Care Home where she received care and support from the devoted staff. Eleanors life was honoured at a funeral service on Saturday, March 1st, 2014, at Hamiota United Church, followed by internment at Hamiota Cemetery. Grandchildren Stacey Wan and Kent Smith reflected on their Grandmothers life. Grandaughter Heather Flett did a reading and Grandson Michael Smith carried her urn to its final place of rest in Hamiota Cemetery. Campbell Funeral Home capably and compassionately managed the arrangements. The family extend a special thanks to Dr. Karen Juce and the entire staff of Birch Lodge for their compassionate care. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Birch Lodge Equipment Fund.
