HALES: Barry Alfred Martin born October 24, 1943, passed away with his family by his side February 15, 2014 at Dinsdale Personal Care Home. Barry was born in Rapid City, the second child of Fred and May Hales. Barry grew up on a farm just outside of Rapid City where his mother and father had a milk route which was run as a family. Barry attended elementary and high school in Rapid City which is now the museum. Barry quit school at an early age and started in to the work force at the age of 16 at Sample Store. He worked various other jobs in Rapid City before spending 25 years working at Manitoba Hydro. Due to health reasons (Diabetes) he had to take an early retirement at the age of 55. During Barry's years he loved the sport curling and was the President of the Rapid City Curling Club and also spent some time as a Councillor for the Town of Rapid City. He spent lots of time at the rink curling, visiting and enjoying a good "Rink Hot Dog." Barry loved to spend time outdoors whether it was gardening, planting trees, building his cabin in his back yard where lots of family gatherings happened. The family gatherings could have been wiener roast lunches to hot chocolate and marshmallows in the winter time. He also loved to tear down buildings, one was the Pettapiece Elevator which was then used to build their new family home in 1980 in Rapid City. Barry and Carol enjoyed going to Auction Sales together. He loved to collect antiques and had a substantial collection. Two of his biggest collections and his pride and joy was his Medalta Potteries and Occupy Japan collection. Barry eventually travelled to Alberta to attain his Auctioneering Certificate which turned into a family business. Barry's love in music has been passed on to his children and grandchildren.
