SMITH: Margaret "Peggy" Josephine (nee Woods). At the age of 92, Peggy passed away on April 17, 2014 surrounded by family at Fairview Personal Care Home in Brandon. Peggy will be deeply missed by her husband of nearly 69 years Richard (Dick) Smith. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister Kal Kneeshaw, son Bill (Lynn), daughter Kathleen Helen, son Richard (Alvina), son David (Shelley), grandchildren Kaleigh, Paula, Nathan, Brennagh, Michaela, and Kieran as well as numerous nieces and nephews who knew her as “Aunty Peg”. Her loving spirit will be dearly shared with her great grandchildren Kate and Nicholas. She was predeceased by her brother Jack Woods. Peggy was born on October 6, 1921 on the family farm near Beulah, Manitoba to G.L. and Eleanor Woods. She attended school in Beulah and Miniota and then attended Teacher’s College in 1939. Peggy taught school at Endcliffe, Beulah and Birtle. On December 5, 1945 she married Dick Smith; they lived on the Smith family farm near Birtle. In 1952, they moved to Birtle. She was heavily involved in church activities including playing the organ, leading choirs, teaching Sunday school, and leading various youth groups. In 1965, the family moved to Neepawa. Peggy resumed her teaching career at Hazel M. Kellington School, first in the classroom then as a music specialist, conducting and training numerous choirs. She was one of the founders of the Neepawa and District Fine Arts Festival. In 1980, they moved to Brandon. Dick and Peggy were avid bowlers and golfers. Peggy was a voracious reader and solver of crossword puzzles. They were very active in the local Seniors for Seniors organization. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Fairview Home for their care and kindness. As Peggy wished, cremation has taken place and a family graveside service will be held in early June.
